CATL Edged Out LG Energy Solution for the Lead by GWh Deployed in 2021 Q1

CATL, LG Energy Solution and Panasonic on the Podium

Through the first three months of 2021, Chinese cell supplier CATL edged out LG Energy Solution (“LGES”) for the lead by GWh deployed onto roads globally.

In 2021 Q1, CATL deployed a total of 13.3 GWh of battery capacity onto roads in newly sold passenger EVs globally, 12% more than the 11.9 GWh deployed globally by LGES, and 46% more than the 9.1 GWh deployed by third-placed Panasonic, according to data from Adamas Intelligence’s EV Battery Capacity and Battery Metals Tracker.

Despite Being Passed by LGES in February and March, CATL’s Strong January Performance Earned it the Lead in Q1

Interestingly, in both February and March 2021, LGES beat CATL by GWh deployed onto roads globally, however, in January 2021 CATL deployed 66% more capacity onto roads than LGES giving CATL a substantial early lead on the competition that translated into a Q1 victory.

CATL Crushed the Competition in China, Deployed More GWh Than Next 32 Cell Suppliers Combined

Through the first three months of 2021, CATL deployed 10.6 GWh of passenger EV battery capacity onto roads in newly sold passenger EVs in China, more than the next 32 cell suppliers combined, according to data from Adamas Intelligence’s EV Battery Capacity and Battery Metals Tracker.

CATL Deployed 11.5 GWh Onto Roads in Passenger EVs, Buses, Trucks and Special Purpose Vehicles

Taking into account an additional 0.7 GWh deployed by CATL into newly sold buses and 0.2 GWh deployed into heavy trucks and special purpose vehicles, Adamas Intelligence data indicates that CATL deployed a total of 11.5 GWh onto Chinese roads in 2021 Q1 versus a total of 12.2 GWh installed over the same period, according to the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance.

Looking forward, we expect to see CATL maintain its dominance in China in the months ahead and expect to see up-and-comers CALB and Gotion cement themselves among China’s top-five before challenging Samsung SDI and SK Innovation for a top-five spot globally.
